Hamilton council warned over pricey burial plots

Hamilton City Council is being warned, it could be breaching the Burial and Cremation Act if it makes burial plots too expensive.

Hamilton City Council's Cemetery Management plan proposes a new reception and administration building and outdoor committal shelter.

Funeral Directors Association CEO Katrina Shanks says this redevelopment could see some families priced out, and that's a human rights issue.

"Because at the end of the day, there are many people for religious reasons don't want to be cremated and they want to be buried, but that choice may be taken away from them."

Shanks says it's already very expensive to be buried in Hamilton.

"Because our concern is it becomes even more unaffordable if they do this development and it's not needed and it's on a cost-recovery basis."

It already costs around $3500 to be buried in a Hamilton cemetery.
