An elderly woman is dead after being hit by a truck in Hamilton.

The woman was on a pedestrian crossing on Ruakura Rd, Hamilton East, when the crash happened.

Waikato police Senior Sergeant Simon Cherry said the road has since been closed and the serious crash and commercial vehicle investigation units are at the scene along with CIB staff.

St John said it was called to the crash, outside Hilda Ross Rest Home, at 11.14am but the woman died at the scene.
