Te Papa has had a bumper summer season with record visitor numbers.

The national museum has had 165,000 people through its doors over summer, that's 20,000 more visitors than this time last year.

Spokesperson Kate Camp puts the huge jump in patronage down to having both the Dreamworks and Gallipoli exhibitions on at the same time.

"There has been queues for Gallipoli and people always say the same thing which is 'I queued to get in and it was worth the wait' so it's been really popular."

Meanwhile Marty the Zebra and Kung Fu Panda have also helped to pull in the extra visitors to Te Papa this summer.

Ms Camp said 52,000 people have already visited the Dreamworks exhibition, a much higher number than they predicted.

"Dreamworks animation is going to be really popular right through the school holidays and then a lot of school groups are going to be coming in as well because it's got quite a creative educational component as well as just the fun factor."
