Thousands of people gathered in Christchurch to rock out to the nation's best homegrown talent, in tribute those affected by the Christchurch terror attack last month.

More than 20,000 people packed into Christchurch Stadium for the You Are Us/Aroha Nui benefit concert.

Fans were delighted when international superstars Marlon Williams and Lorde took the stage to perform a cover of Simon and Garfunkel's Sound of Silence.

The pair played the song seated and facing each other in an intimate performance, and Lorde used the opportunity to share her love and support with the Muslim community.

"I also want to say to our Muslim community, to our brothers and sisters, you have been so strong, and so resilient, and so graceful," she said.

"And we are with you, and this is our way of standing beside you from here on out."

Lorde also performed a stripped down version of her hit song, Team with Bic Runga.

Some of the lyrics were perfect for the occasion, as the pair sang: "We're on each other's team".

All proceeds from the benefit concert will go to the Our People, Our City fund, set up to help those affected by the Christchurch mosque shootings which left 50 people dead and many more injured on March 15.
