A woman has died after a car hit a power pole in the rural town of Dunsandel last night.

The incident occurred about 9.20pm on Dunsandel and Brookside Rd about 40km west of Christchurch.

Police said the sole occupant of the vehicle, a 38-year-old woman, died in the single vehicle crash.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

It is the second fatal crash on New Zealand roads this weekend. 

A person died after a single-car crash in Auckland's Highland Park suburb on Friday night. 

Police received report of the Aviemore Drive crash around quarter past 10. 

Another person received serious injuries and was transported to Middlemore Hospital.
