A woman has been stabbed in central Auckland this afternoon.

Police attended an incident at Anzac Ave, where a police cordon is now place.

Police confirmed a man is in custody and is assisting them with inquiries. He has not been charged.

A witness said the attack happened outside the entrance to the Wilson Parking building.

There were "heaps" of ambulances at the scene, the witness said.

Bystander Abhi said he saw a woman lying down on the ground, just outside the Wilson carpark building.

"I spoke to one of the ladies who witnessed it all," Abhi said.

"She told me it was a white guy, a tall guy, with some kind of kitchen knife in his hand. She saw him stabbing her in the back and in the front.

"All I saw was a lady lying down, we all went to see what's going on," the witness told Abhi.

Police were waiting to hear from St John about the extent of the woman's injuries.

The woman is believed to be in a critical condition.

It is thought that the man and woman were not known to each other.

Traffic is still flowing along Anzac Ave. However, there is an area that's cordoned off.

Another witness said an ambulance and a couple of police cars were at the scene.

Police are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident.

They will provide a further update later today.

Charges have not been ruled out, police said, but it was too early to speculate on the incident and what would happen next.
