A man aged in his early 50s has been killed in a hit and run in New Lynn.

Police were called to Great North Rd at Crum Ave about 9pm yesterday.

The man died at the scene.

Detective Sergeant Steve Salton said police believed the driver of the vehicle would have known that they had hit someone and urged the driver to come forward.

"We are also keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the crash last night or may have seen a vehicle that has damage to the left front, which they didn't have before."
