A man is being treated by paramedics at Riversdale Beach in Wairarapa following a stingray attack.
A police spokeswoman confirmed police were responding to the reported attack.
The incident was initially believed to have involved a shark, but a lifeguard at Riversdale had since told the Wairarapa Times-Age it had involved a stingray, which police subsequently confirmed.
The victim had been stung twice by the stingray, he said.
Officers rushed to the scene following a call shortly after 1 pm.
