Hundreds of people witnessed a major police chase which ended at Auckland's waterfront with a person being loaded into the back of a cop car.

The chase this afternoon involved dozens of police officers, dog handlers and the Eagle helicopter.

Police say two men in a stolen car were seen driving around Mount Wellington and into Central Auckland at around 1.45pm today.

Police staff put spikes out at about 2.20pm in Central Auckland.

The driver of the car and passenger fled on foot, but were arrested by Police in Halsey St, Auckland.

The two men who were arrested will face driving charges plus other charges in relation to the stolen vehicle.
