A jockey has died during a racing club meeting in Gore after two riders collided.

The fall happened during Race 8 at the Tapanui Racing Club meeting.

St John confirmed that a person had died at the scene.

Spokeswoman Victoria Hawkins says an ambulance was already at the event as a precaution but another one was dispatched because of the "serious nature" of the incident.

Point Proven, ridden by Rebecca Black, and Misscattlecreek and its jockey Terry Moseley fell to the track with around 700m to run.

Misscattlecreek apparently had to be euthanased following the fall.
