A person has died after a car collided with a truck in Canterbury.

Police say they were called to the intersection of Woodstock Road and Harmans Gorge Road in the Waimakariri District just before midday.

Emergency services were called to the crash at the intersection of Woodstock Rd and Harmans Gorge Rd, Waimakariri, about 11.40am.

A second person is believed to be seriously injured.

The Serious Crash Unit had been advised.

The road was expected to be closed for some time. Diversions were being put in place and motorists were advised to avoid the area.
