The Queen's Birthday weekend road toll has climbed to two.
Police have confirmed a person has died at the scene, after a car crashed down a bank on State Highway 35, north of Te Araroa in the Gisborne district.
There were five people in the car.
A baby is injured and has been taken to hospital in a helicopter.
The condition of the other people in the vehicle is as yet unknown.
Around 11pm last night, a pedestrian was killed in a crash near Napier Airport - the first fatality of the weekend on the roads.
The Queen's Birthday holiday period runs from 4pm yesterday afternoon until 6am Tuesday morning.
