School leavers are flocking to the University of Canterbury in greater numbers than before the quakes.

2018 enrolments are up seven per cent on last year, but it's school leavers having the biggest impact.

This year, 1313 school leavers enrolled at UC, up from 1243 in 2010.

UC Vice-Chancellor Dr Rod Carr says it's not just locals choosing Canterbury.

"We've seen more Canterbury high school kids choose University of Canterbury, which is great, and we're also seeing a record number of new to UC high school leavers out of both Auckland and Wellington."

"Getting young Christchurch kids to stay is really important for the future of the city, and attracting young talented people from not only around New Zealand but from around the world is also important."

He says it's a combination of many things, including the recovery of the city.

"The impact of more expensive accommodation in other major New Zealand cities, and more congestion and inconvenience of coming and going over distances."

Dr Carr says they wont know the impact of free fees for first year of study until they finish their survey of new to UC students.
