Labour says the government should be giving parents more support for Early Childhood Education.

The Government said that for every dollar parents chip in, they spend $4.80.

However, Labour's Education spokesman Chris Hipkins said the funding contribution from government is going down in real terms.

"We recognise that parents are having to pick up the tab for more and more of the costs of their kids early childhood education because the government aren't coming top the party and meeting their share."

He said some kindergartens are now running all day, rather than for six hours, as that's what working parents need.

"They're struggling to make ends meet on the funding model so they are having to do different things that they wouldn't want to do based in the quality of education for kids."

Parents currently get up to six hours a day of government-funded kindergarten.
