The QS World University Rankings are out, with just two New Zealand establishments in the top 200.

They are the University of Auckland, ranking 82nd on the list, and the University of Otago at 173rd.

Auckland University is the best-performing New Zealand institute across the board.

It ranks in the top 100 across four of the five faculty areas.

They include Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences and Management, and Engineering and Technology.

New Zealand has taken out three spots in the top 100 Arts and Humanities faculties worldwide - with Auckland ranking 28th, Victoria 39th and Otago 59th.

In Social Sciences and Management, New Zealand fares even better, with four universities in the top 100 - Auckland, Victoria, Canterbury and Otago.

Auckland University's engineering department is one of the assets that's seen it ranked among the best universities in the world.

While performing well across the board, it's the only New Zealand university to rank highly for its engineering faculty.

Vice Chancellor Stuart McCutcheon said how a faculty is recognised by its peers and employers is integral to its international ranking.

"And I think we of course have very high standards in the engineering faculty, and a strong demand by students to get into that faculty."

Massachusetts Institute of Technology is ranked number on in the world, followed by Harvard.
