A Dunedin church is making sure its staff are coping after a man died in a fire in their car park during a Sunday service.

Nations Church security staff and ushers were among the first to respond to the incident but despite desperate rescue efforts, the man died at the scene.

Nations Church Pastor Peter Tate says it's important that those who witnessed what happened are well supported.

"We have a pastoral care person in our church that they can contact if they require any further support. Also we can organise professional counselling if needed."

Police have established the death is not suspicious and say it will be referred to the Coroner.
