Dramatic scenes on a Kapiti beach this morning as a police pursuit came to an end.

The pursuit began just before 5.30am when police spotted a stolen ute being driven near Paekakariki.

The vehicle was pursued over the Haywards Hill, and back towards Paekakariki where road spikes where laid out to stop the driver.

However they failed to do so, and the driver continued on, with three deflated tyres, towards Paraparaumu beach.

Inspector John Spence says the man drove onto the beach before jumping out and making a run for it - he was finally brought down by a police dog.

He says the man is now in custody at Paraparaumu police station.

"No doubt he will be interviewed, and I would have no doubt also that charges will follow."
