A Christchurch couple who stole tax-payer funds for a lavish live-style, won’t be going to jail.

61-year-old Cecilia Ellenbroek and 64-year-old Alfonsus Ellenbroek defrauded the Alpha Support Centre Trust of nearly half a million dollars.

The couple spent the money on personal expenses - including international travel, accommodation, meals, entertainment, clothing, jewellery and household appliances.

In sentencing, Judge David Saunders took into account the couple's early plea, and the fact full reparation will be made

He sentenced Cecilia Ellenbroek to 12 months' home detention and 300 hours' community service.

Alfonsus Ellenbroek was sentenced to six months community detention with curfew, and 200 hours of community service.
