A teenager has been arrested after leading police on a chase that started on the North Shore and ended with a vehicle stopped by spikes in Waikato.

Police say the pursuit started at 4am, when police observed two vehicles acting suspiciously near Forrest Hill on Auckland's North Shore.

"Police have continued to observe these vehicles when both drove off at speed near Spaghetti Junction.

"Eagle was deployed and continued to monitor one of the vehicles as it travelled around West Auckland, before travelling south."

The spokesperson said spikes were successfully used near Pokeno, with the 16-year-old driver arrested without further incident.

"Charges cannot be ruled out in this matter."

Inquiries were still ongoing into the second vehicle that drove away from officers.

Meanwhile, a second pursuit sent authorities to the West Auckland suburb of Glendene after reports of a pursuit involving a stolen vehicle just after midnight, the Herald understands.

Several young people who had been inside the car were eventually stopped after spikes were used to puncture the vehicle's two left tyres.

At least five people were taken into custody at the scene.

A witness described the stolen vehicle as a 2014 Toyota Aqua. The ignition had been broken and tools could be seen in the back seat.
