A Christchurch ANZAC day service has been cancelled in the wake of the mosque attacks.

The city council organised event in Sydenham was called off after Police requested services be consolidated so they can provide appropriate support for large gatherings.

However, the city's main ANZAC Day service will go ahead in Cranmer Square, with increased security and a strong Police presence.

Council spokesperson Matt Nichols says there'll be a visible police presence at dawn services for the safety and reassurance of the community.

He says people coming to the Cranmer Square service should also avoid bringing bags to minimise delays.

The news comes one day after services in the Auckland region were cut from 84 to 26.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says she is hopeful people will still have somewhere to remember the fallen.

"My hope would be that we would still see New Zealanders participating in commemorations around ANZAC Day."
