One of two people arrested after a police chase in Christchurch that later ended in a fatal hit and run says he was attempting to return his gang patch at the time.

Marcel Geros faced a charge of unlawfully entering a motor vehicle in the Christchurch District Court this morning.

He and one other man were arrested after a police pursuit in New Brighton last week.

Geros has been released on bail to appear for a case review hearing in October.

Judge Raole noted that dissociating himself from the gang had been part of an earlier condition imposed on him.

Police are still searching for the alleged driver, Liam Strickland.

The scene of the fatal hit and run will be closed this afternoon as police continue to investigate.

Part of Hawke St and Shaw Ave will be closed from 1.30pm to 4pm.
