There will be an increased police presence at Christchurch's main ANZAC day dawn service.

This is after an event in Sydenham was called off so police have enough resources to provide appropriate support for large gatherings.

Christchurch City Council spokesman Matt Nichols says there will be a visible police presence at Dawn Services for the safety and reassurance of the community.

"We've been working with police, who are going to be going ahead with extra security measures, and there will be an increased police presence around Cramner Square for the dawn service."

Nichols says people coming to the Dawn Service in Cranmer Square should also avoid bringing bags to minimise delays.

Nichols says the council hopes people understand the exceptional circumstances they're facing.

"We've decided, with partnership of the community board, not to proceed with that in favour of encouraging community members in that part of the city to consider joining the larger events instead."

However, two Banks Peninsula ANZAC day services that were thought to be cancelled will go ahead.

Christchurch's RSA president Pete Dawson was livid after he was informed the services in Akaroa and Little River were cancelled.

He says after discussions with Christchurch City Council it was decided the RSA lead services are back on track.

"There should have been consultation with the RSA, it;s not the council's call to make that decision."

Around the country however, at least 50 services will not go ahead due to security concerns after the mosque attacks.
