There are hopes Christchurch's new, roofed stadium will draw big performers and big crowds to the city.
Minister for Greater Christchurch Regeneration, Megan Woods, has announced the government will use $220 million of the $300 million capital acceleration fund on a multi-purpose stadium.
"Having a roof means it will be more than just a sports facility but will also attract big concerts to the city."
Mayor Lianne Dalziel says everyone from students to the hospitality industry misses out when concerts are held elsewhere.
