Further collisions between cows and motorists spark warnings

Both motorists and farmers in the Selwyn District are being warned once again after further collisions between motorists and cows.

Star.Kiwi reports that there have been two car crashes involving cows in the last month.

The latest incident took place on Horororata Dunsandel Road last week, killing the cow.

Before then, Rolleston resident Carissa Maitland hit a cow as she was driving home from the Super Rugby final on August 4th.

She told Star.Kiwi that it was “pretty terrifying” and that the cow came out of  nowhere, hit her bonnet and “rolled back” onto the windscreen.

It follows two incidents that happened within a week of each other in July.

One, on July 12th, involved former mayor Bill Woods as he was travelling home from the airport late at night.

The second, on July 19th, caused serious injuries for a 27-year-old driver in Burnham.

North Canterbury Federated Farmers chairman Michael Woodward told Star.Kiwi that the accidents are likely down to “basic security” not being followed or people leaving gates open on properties.

He says farmers should use these incidents as a reminder to check their boundaries.
