There are concerns the long term running costs of Christchurch's new stadium won't be sustainable.

The City Council voted yesterday to spend $220 million of it's $300 million government funding on the multi-purpose arena.

But Yani Johanson says not just the capital cost but the ongoing running costs of the stadium need considering.

"A business case was clearly articulated, so my view on the stadium has always been let's get the business case done and see how it stacks up before we know how much money we should allocate to it."

Johanson says he's not opposed to how the money is being spent, but is disappointed over the amount of public consultation needed.

"For far too long the recovery and rebuild has been imposed on people of Christchurch, and we have an opportunity [yesterday] as a council I believe to openly and transparently engage with our community over this funding."

He was the only councillor opposed to stadium funding.
