Christchurch restaurants struggle for survival

There are fears from the hospitality industry that Christchurch's CBD has peaked too soon.

Another restaurant, Bamboozle on Cambridge Terrace, has been forced to close.

The closures follow a string of others in the city, as some hospitality operators struggle for survival.

Canterbury President of Hospitality New Zealand Peter Morrison says too many restaurants are open before key projects are finished.

"Christchurch doesn't have enough people for the amount of restaurants which are available. The problem is when people planned the restaurants they were expecting the Metro centre and new stadium to be built, which hasn't happened."

Bamboozle, owned by veteran Christchurch restaurateur and chef Phillip Kraal, "celebrated" its closing night with a $70 a head banquet on Saturday.

Ian Riach from Coffee Works called into Canterbury Mornings with Chris Lynch this morning to share his views on what is happening to the Christchurch hospitality scene.
