Christchurch residents are still being asked to save water over the summer.

This comes as the city council's forking out $2.25 million to install ultraviolet at a pump station that provides 11-percent of the central city's water.

But Water Supply Programme manager Helen Beaumont says there's still remedial works to upgrade well heads, and they want to continue working on the job over summer.

"We can only take well heads out of service if less water is used over the summer period."

Beaumont says the public can have their say of what water saving measures they are prepared to adopt in a survey to help move the program forward.

"We are looking at the technical feasibility of UV treatment at a shortlist of five other pump stations now."

Councillor Yani Johanson says the city's been forced to spend huge amounts on the issue, but there are not any easy answers.

"It has been driven by a number of external factors, but Christchurch is putting it's best foot forward to be rid of chlorine as soon as possible."
