A transformed part of Christchurch's red zone is being used to help children recovering from earthquake-related stresses.

The Avon Otakaro network is running programs with a focus on grounding letting children express themselves in the area.

Spokesman Evan Smith says the types of issues schools are seeing now are different to those seen after the quake.

"Some of them weren't even born when the quakes happened, but they are inheriting the stress from their parents."

Smith added the programs aim to support teachers and students dealing with PTSD.

He says the red zone has become a great resource for people and children to de-stress.

"It gives you a sense of peace. A lot of that area provides that now, which is the complete reverse of what it was doing two to three years ago, and it's doing that for the kids."

Smith says they work closely education experts to make sure their programs are not only therapeutic but also apart of the school curriculum.
