A Christchurch man has been fined for employing an unlicensed student to help carry out electrical work.

Tu Nguyen and the student installed data and power sockets, switchboard fuses and LED lights.

He had hired an electrical company to complete the work, but returned to the property over the weekend to do it himself.

He was reported by the company which found safety issues with live cables when they returned.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment says it's not only illegal to carry out unlicensed work  it can endanger lives

Nguyen was fined more than $2500.
