A property manager is welcoming an investigation into the cause of a spike in hot water cylinder failures in Christchurch.

Home owners, property managers and Canterbury Master Plumbers Association are pointing the finger at the high level of chlorine in the water.

The Christchurch City Council met with cylinder manufactures on Friday and have launched an investigation into the issue.

Good Girls Property Manager, Prudence Morrell says they have had to replace 15 in just a few months.

She says they've had two more cylinders blow just 72 hours ago and there's such a shortage they can't find the right size cylinder until next Tuesday.

Morrell says she's very glad they're doing it because she has to compensate tenants who are unable to shower.

Morrell says it's a turn around from when she first rang the council and was told it was impossible.

Manager Technical Services, Three Waters and Waste, Tim Drennan, says manufactures will go away and look at some of their data.

He says they will also talk to industry experts to get an idea where these cylinders are failing and the type of cylinders that are failing.

Drennan, says they will also talk to other councils around the country to see if they have had similar issues.
