A Christchurch property manager believes chlorine is the trigger that is causing damage to water cylinders across the city.
Brazier Property Investment has replaced 22 cylinders in the past couple of months, four in the same housing block.
Tony Brazier of Brazier Property Investment says although Canterbury water isn't good for copper anyway, the chlorine is clearing gunk from the cylinders that was covering cracks.
He says the need for repairs or replacement would've been delayed because of gunk, is now all happening all at once because of the chlorine lifting out the coating.
The City Council is set to meet with industry professionals tomorrow.
