A man allegedly behind a Christchurch hit and run may not be out on his own.

Police are still looking for 21-year-old Liam Strickland in relation to last week's New Brighton fatality.

A 49-year-old man, identified as Dean Aimes, was killed when he was hit by a person driving a stolen vehicle on the intersection of Hawke St and Shaw Av.

Canterbury Acting District Commander Mike Johnson says they believe he's being assisted by others.

He says anyone helping or harbouring Strickland could be up for jail time.

Johnson says police have finished forensically examining the white van linked to the hit and run.

On Saturday, it was reported that there was a heavy police presence in Phillipstown as part of the search.

It comes after nine properties were searched on Thursday as part of the manhunt, with six people taken into custody as a result.
