Fire crews are still dealing with two large scrub fires in Canterbury.
The blaze at Knights Road in Rolleston broke out late yesterday, it has a perimeter of 1600 metres
Two houses were destroyed in the fast moving fire, and firefighters will probably be there all day.
Five rural fire trucks have spent the night keeping watch, Fire and Emergency shift manager Riwai Grace said fresh crews took over at daylight.
He said teams will carry out a recce of the area shortly.
"They might have a helicopter and they'll fly over the area to look for hot spots, they'll just be checking to see that there's no slow burning fires."
Grace said another fire at Coutts Island near the Airport, is expected to burn for another couple of days.
He is urging people to take extra care in the current high risk dry conditions.
"If you are going to light any fires around the country please check with the relevant authorities and if you see fire or smoke and you're not sure, please ring 111, the sooner we get to these fires the smaller they are."
