Drinking alcohol on the sidelines of Christchurch’s rugby league fields could be banned this winter.

Canterbury Rugby League wants Christchurch City Council to prohibit alcohol at rugby league playing fields and adjoining car parks during the rugby season.

City Councillor Sara Templeton says she is hopeful the ban goes ahead to help curb bad behaviour on the sidelines.

"There have been some incidents in previous years where there's been quite strong anti-social behaviour from those drinking on the sidelines."

Templeton says the ban would apply to 17 sports fields across the city this winter.

"So it's a temporary ban over winter. We're not able to make it permanent on these fields every winter, that would need a bylaw change."

The ban is being considered by the Council’s Regulatory Performance Committee this afternoon.
