Ports of Auckland CEO Tony Gibson has announced he will step down at the end of next month.

He says it's been a difficult decision but over recent months there have been persistent and sometimes personal attacks on him.

Tony Gibson says he feels it is damaging to the company and the great people he works with.

He says for the sake of their people and the good work they do, he's leaving.

Deputy CEO and CFO Wayne Thompson will be Interim CEO until a new CEO is appointed.
