There is only a matter of days left to send a cheque to a handful of major organisations, with several major organisations set to quell the enthusiasm of Kiwis for writing cheques.

NZ Post and KiwiBank are calling time on cheques on Friday, with ACC and Inland Revenue calling it quits from Sunday.

Massey Business School associate professor Claire Matthews says for big outfits such as ACC and IRD, accepting cheques is not worth it anymore.

"The infrastructure they need to be able to process cheques has simply got to the point where the volume of cheques coming through doesn't warrant it."

She says the number of cheques we use, has been falling for a long time.

"It's likely to have enormous inconsequentialist impact for a lot of people, but for a small number of people, they will really notice it.

"That's likely to be older people but also some businesses."

James Brown, General Manager for FintechNZ says there's one thing organisations must do before cheques are phased out.

"How do we interact with our customers in getting them onto other platforms that they're comfortable using and they trust, before we make the decision to pull the plug."
