Infrastructure New Zealand says it's refreshing to see the Government taking a proactive approach towards funding and managing the infrastructure shortfall.

Minster Shane Jones yesterday announced a new independent entity to help the country better meet future infrastructure needs, while improving long-term economic performance.

Infrastructure New Zealand CEO Stephen Selwood says it's a step in the right direction.

"The infrastructure body as we see it will be set up to make sure that infrastructure goes in ahead of demand rather than the other way around," he says.

"And to make sure its there to support the growth of cities rather than react to the growth."

Selwood says while it should help speed up projects it's important they don't rush into anything.

"It is an important component with this body that it not only looks at delivering projects faster, sooner, quicker and better - but also makes sure that we are investing as a country in the right project."
