Farmers welcome exemption from ETS

The government's made the call to leave out agriculture in its review of the emission's trading scheme.

Climate Change Minister Tim Groser said it wouldn't be economically viable to include agriculture, despite it accounting for 47% of New Zealand's greenhouse gas emissions.

Federated Farmers spokesperson Anders Crofoot said it wouldn't be fair to include it, as it would disadvantage the industry against trading partners.

"If our trading partners are actually doing similar things with agriculture then there is logic to having New Zealand do it. And also, if some new technology came into being."

Crofoot said it would only work if there were practical solutions to bio-emissions.

But he believes the ETS isn't one.

"It's not a policy that would actually achieve anything. The way it is initially constructed, there isn't any impetus for change. It's really just an imposition."
