Air New Zealand's disappointed some of its engineers are planning to strike and disrupt tens of thousands of Kiwis' Christmas plans.

A thousand unionised Air New Zealand engineers and support staff have issued a strike notice for the busiest flying day of the year, December 21.

It is believed around 40,000 New Zealanders would be disrupted by this strike.

GM of maintenance Viv de Beus says it's over pay and conditions.

He says the two groups were still negotiating when the unions announced the strike.

"Seemingly willing to disrupt the travel plans of so many of our customers travelling at Christmas and at a time where we believed negotiations were still progressing."

de Beus says it's disappointing they've opted for this.

"These employees earn well over double the average Kiwi wage at $15,000. As a group, they've received a pay increase over the last 12 years. We're not talking about a situation like the teachers and the nurses here."
