It's the Royal New Zealand Navy's 75th anniversary and a special day of celebrations is underway at the Devonport Naval Base in Auckland.

It's the first time in two years the base has been open to the public and kicks off a series of events throughout the summer.

Around 500 people showed up throughout the day including sailor's family members, veterans and youth looking at a career in maritime.

Chief of Navy, Rear Admiral John Martin, said it's great to connect those who have served, with today's sailors.

He said the job's both dangerous and beautiful and that shared experience connects mariners - whether they're from 1941 or today.

He added it's also an opportunity for veterans to see just how much the navy's advanced through hands-on experience with new technology.

Senior Navigation Instructor David Hedgeley said the bridge simulation facility is a big attraction for both returning veterans and the wider public.

He said sometimes people fall over in the simulation, even though the room doesn't move.

"The thing that gets people the most is how big the screens are, it's like a Playstation on steroids".

The next event is a full ceremonial formation entry into Auckland Harbour on February 8.
