A narrow majority of Aucklanders are in favour of the proposed regional fuel tax.

A Colmar Brunton poll of 4000 Aucklanders found 52 percent support the tax, while 43 percent oppose it.

Mayor Phil Goff says it's more support than he was expecting, considering people will be paying more under it.

He says it shows Aucklanders understand that we can't just sit on our hands, and must invest more into transport.
