Will it be third time lucky for John Palino?

The two-time Auckland mayoral candidate has announced he's throwing his hat in the ring again.

He came second behind Len Brown in 2013, and fourth in his 2016 run.

Palino says that the city needs his help.

"We need to fix Auckland. It's an absolute mess."

He says it's time for a centre-right mayor in Auckland, and would like some help from the National Party.

"It would be wonderful if National could come on board and help out and we would win if we do. But even if they don't, we need to make sure one of us is running on the centre-right."

Palino says he talked policy with National leader Simon Bridges last week, who liked what he had to say.

He says despite it being his third attempt, people are finally starting to come onboard with his ideas.

Palino is one of two who have officially announced they're running, alongside freelance media operator Craig Lord.

It's expected incumbent mayor Phil Goff will stand again, though he is yet to confirm. Former Labour Party MP John Tamihere has hinted he'll run as well.

Palino came to prominence after hosting a restaurant renovation show on Three.
