New Zealand's ironman opened his Olympic campaign in London tonight.

Brent Newdick has made a solid start to the men's decathlon in London.

The Commonwealth Games silver medallist will line-up in the 100 metres, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400 metres over a 12-hour period.

Newdick is in 15th place after the first two events.

He was 22nd after the 100 metres, but produced the 11th best effort in the long jump to take his points tally to 1738.

He is 341 points behind the runaway leader, American Ashton Eaton, who has won both events.

Stuart Farquhar and Lucy Van Dalen will also be in action at the main stadium.

Farquhar will be involved in javelin qualifying, while Van Dalen will line-up in the semi-finals of the women's 1500 metres.
