Shane Smeltz's A-League grand final pain has been amplified after being forced to undergo plastic surgery in a Brisbane hospital.
The All Whites striker copped an accidental elbow from Brisbane captain Matt Smith in the 15th minute of the Perth Glory's dramatic 2-1 loss to the Roar in Brisbane.
Smeltz played 80 minutes of the decider despite a horrific gash under his nose.
"Obviously the game hurts more, it's not good it's one of those things that happens in football and unfortunately I copped it early."
The Brisbane Roar won the game courtesy of a controversial stoppage time penalty from Besart Berisha.
