Calls for urgency over shoulder charge ban

By: Nick Walker | Latest Rugby League News | Tuesday July 24 2012 12:55

There are calls for urgency in the NRL's assessment on whether to ban shoulder charges.

Doctors from all 16 clubs have called for the ARL Commission to ban the tackle in the wake of a handful of injuries as a result of shoulder charges gone wrong.

Warriors doctor John Mayhew says the tackle needs to be outlawed immediately.

He says it's a rare display of the doctors being united, which shows how dangerous shoulder charges can be.

Mayhew says the risk of serious injury if simply too great.

"We're from a medical point of view saying it's an unreasonable risk, that we believe that we're trying to make the game safer.

"We believe it's unacceptable."

Rabbitohs fullback Greg Inglis faces a five match ban for his shoulder charge on Dragons utility Dean Young.

Panthers hooker Travis Burns could be suspended for up to 16 weeks for two separate charges after being red carded in their win over the Roosters.
