DOC building three-storey wind turbine

By: Yvette McCullough | Latest Wellington News | Tuesday May 8 2012 12:26

The Department of Conservation's building a three-storey wind turbine in the middle of Wellington Harbour.

The 15m tall turbine will be erected on Matiu/Somes Island by the end of June.

It'll help the nature reserve produce its own power, as it currently relies on diesel-powered generators.

Visitor assets manager Peter Blaxter says environmental impact studies show the impact will be quite minimal.

"You won't really notice it from around the harbour. It will be painted a grey colour so it'll blend in to the hills and background. There may be a small impact on some of the birds but we've got quite a big monitoring program to double check that."

Mr Blaxter says it's part of a renewable energy project on the island, which also includes solar panels and energy storage banks.
