Severe weather warnings have prompted authorities to make a new opening for the Rakaia River. The current opening to the north has left Rakaia hut residents vulnerable to flood and storm surges. Selwyn District Council spokesman Douglas Marshall says they've now moved it to the south. "The idea is that the flood flows, which aren't really large flows coming down the river later today, will now have a new opening to go through as opposed to the opening to the north and that will take away any pressure from the huts."
