Council takes action against dog owner

By: Sophie Lowery | Lower North Island News | Tuesday July 10 2012 12:47

Gisborne District Council is taking legal action against the owner of a dog who attacked an elderly woman while she was riding a mobility scooter.

A 77-year-old woman was left with deep cuts to her arm last week, after a Neapolitan Mastiff scaled a two metre high fence and pulled her from the scooter, before biting her.

Animal control manager Steve Greaves says charges will be laid against the 25-year-old owner because the two parties couldn't reach an agreement over the dog's fate.

Mr Greaves says the owner will face a fine and could be banned from owning a dog for five years, if she's convicted.
