Beneficiaries into work programme a success

By: Newstalk ZB staff | Latest Christchurch News | Wednesday August 8 2012 13:26

A programme to get Canterbury beneficiaries into paid work in the construction sector is being touted a success.

Over the past nine months, Work and Income and Fletcher Building have recruited and placed 26 beneficiaries into paid employment.

Social development Minister Paula Bennett is defending the numbers and says it takes time to find and train people.

"It actually means it's more likely to be sustainable, that we're likely to get the right skills and training behind them as they work through, and see them progress in careers and not just have a short term job. I think 26 is actually quite significant."

Work and Income's also today appointed a programme manager to be based at Fletcher Building's headquarters, to oversee the employment programme.
