Stress and burnout are increasing amongst workers in Christchurch. Researcher Kate van Heugten says there are multiple reasons for people feeling stress following the earthquakes, and a lot are dealing with challenges at home as well as work. She says stress may be the result of overload, or the ongoing uncertainty around funding, inadequate workspaces and other problems, plus poor social and professional support. She says some Christchurch workers feel their extra efforts in the aftermath of the quakes had perhaps been taken for granted, in that expectations had not been reduced back to levels that were manageable in the longer term. The researcher says burned out workers are inclined to lose their attachment to the workplace, be less productive, and more likely to take sick leave or resign. Photo: NZ Herald |
